That said, the Artifact Crafting was horribly unbalanced and often allowed your heroes to defeat huge enemy armies solo. Takes a bit of getting used to but once you've sublimated the differences you may never go back to HoMM. The devs have been working on this though and have released a new stand-alone rebuild which remixes the gameplay a lot (Pity I don't get it for free after buying the first two D3 games).Īge of Wonders 1,2 & Shadow Magic: Awesome spin on the HoMM formula. Might heroes are no longer a sad sad joke compared to their Magic flinding brethren) the only bad thing is getting kicked out of single-player because you're internet connection has gone down.ĭisciples 1 & 2: Interesting variant on the HoMM formula and in general a lot less forgiving of mistakes.ĭisciples 3: Great graphics, debatable gameplay changes. HoMM 6: A wonderful game shackled with one of the worst DRM systems ever. The Skill Wheel system was a very nice addition though.
HoMM 5: Basically jut HoMM 3 with vastly improved graphics. HoMM 4: Burn the heretic! Seriously, let's forget this one ever happened. That said, balance issues abound but make the game all the more fun. To consume even more space in this post I will now detail various games in these series and my opinions of them.
Now, with Age of Wonders III set to release at the end of the month things are looking good in the land of "Fantasy 4X". More recently new additions to the altar include King's Bounty: The Legend (and add-ons), Warlock: Master of the Arcane and Eador: Masters of the Broken World. Later I discovered the Disciples and Age of Wonders series of games, similar but different enough to be worth the time investment. I spent many a night playing hot-seat multi-player with my roommate and his friends. I am a huge fan, having been indoctrinated into the cult during my first year of university. So, anyone else here a fan of HoMM and games like it?
